Everyone is captivated by Carmen. Her long scarlet locks and bright eyes distinguish her and amplify her prettiness. She was tiny when she first arrived at the Care Centre in 2014, after she was confiscated by local Forestry officers.

Calm, patient and well-behaved are all words that the OFI staff use to describe Carmen. She gets along well with all her orangutan friends. Carmen can be shy with new people and prefers to stick with familiar caregivers. However, once you’ve become her friend, she will trust you no matter what and is always gentle with those she has come to know well.

Carmen is mostly content to be in the background, however she is no shrinking violet. If she has something to declare she will confidently come forward. She is an orangutan who enjoys consistency and routine. On the way to forest school, independent Carmen always walks beside her caregivers. She spots the best “markisas” (passionfruit) and enjoys them as a snack on her way to another fun day with her friends. She isn’t one to spend too much time on the ground. Walking is a means to an end and her goal is always to get to the forest as quickly as she can. She rushes from the sleeping enclosure straight into the open arms of the trees.
