Nestled in the heart of Central Kalimantan, Borneo, OFI’s Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine (Care Centre) serves as a sanctuary for rescued orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans. Many orangutans arrive sick, injured, and emotionally scarred from the trauma of losing their mothers. The incredible team at the Care Centre provides them with the love, medical care, and emotional support they need to heal, so that one day they can be returned to the wild. Without the Care Centre, these vulnerable orangutans would have no home and no hope of survival.

Responding to a growing need.

Located within 80 hectares of pristine peat swamp forest, the Care Centre features several jungle gyms, playgrounds, and learning forests where orangutans master essential survival skills like climbing, foraging, and nest building to prepare them for life in the wild. Orangutans are grouped, usually by age, size and ability, and housed in “pondoks” (Indonesian for camps or shelters) located within forested areas. Here, they are provided with sleeping enclosures, food, vitamins, medicine when needed and daily enrichment.

Since its establishment in 1998, OFI has expanded its operations and infrastructure to care for many hundreds of orangutans, as well as sun bears and other native wildlife. Today, the Care Centre employs over 200 local Indonesian staff and provides care for more than 260 orangutans. The facility also includes:

  • A fully equipped veterinary hospital with an operating room, X-ray department, medical laboratory and quarantine complex.
  • Four forested island sanctuaries (hahas) with supporting infrastructure, located nearby.
  • An enrichment department to provide daily behavioural enrichment to all orangutans.
  • A herbarium nursery to grow native saplings for our reforestation efforts.

Many of these initiatives are possible thanks to the generosity of OFI Australia supporters who donate funds for infrastructure, specialised medical equipment and supplies.

Progress powered by passion!

Supporting the Care Centre operations is one of OFI Australia’s core campaigns. We are committed to improving and upgrading the facilities and supporting OFI staff to provide the orangutans with the best possible care. Orangutans are incredibly strong and can be particularly rambunctious, which means facilities require constant maintenance and upgrades to ensure the safety of both staff and animals.

Thanks to your generous contributions, we’ve been able to support the following projects over the past 12 months:

  • Replaced many of the ageing wooden infant and adolescent sleeping enclosures with larger, elevated structures.
  • Constructed several large double steel enclosures designed for adult male orangutans to move around freely, equipped with hammocks, ropes and enrichment items.
  • Rebuilt old enclosures near the hospital for orangutans receiving ongoing medical treatment, with elevated hardwood floors, benches, and enrichment areas.
  • Replaced a 270 metre concrete pathway damaged by rain and floods to provide safe access to infant playgrounds and quarantine areas.
  • Provided ongoing funding for essential supplies such as soy milk, protein supplements, tranquillisers, antibiotics and worming medication along with equipment needed, including night vision binoculars, camera gear, and new laptops for staff.

Thank you!

Your support enables us to provide the highest level of care for orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans. Together, we’re helping OFI continue its vital work in Borneo, giving these incredible animals a second chance at life in the wild.
