Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest

Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest is in Central Kalimantan and located 12km due west of the small riverside town of Kumai and within an hour of the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) Care Centre & Quarantine, just outside of Pangkalanbun.

Local indigenous people enthusiastically supported the sale of their land, as they perceived an opportunity to protect the forest which will provide health benefits and the potential for a long-term sustainable economic future.

To further protect the forest and the orangutan, Dr Galdikas has contracted a moat around the perimeter.  This moat has already proven invaluable in recent fire fighting.  The peat swamps of Kalimantan, when cleared, are prone to deep seated fires which cannot be extinguished.  It is the peat fires from large scale land clearing, which caused the massive pollution and the destruction of ancient pristine rainforest and the deaths of thousands of orangutan and forest animals in 2004.  Furthermore peat swamps represent one of the largest sinks of carbon which is released as carbon dioxide on burning.  The impact of clearing and fires is catastrophic for the region and the planet.

Orangutan Foundation International and Orangutan Foundation International Australia are actively seeking further funding to:

Acquire more contiguous free hold land … down payments have already been made to purchase Kuku and Bacau, which adjoin Rawa Kuno in the south

–          Restore the degraded areas within Rawa Kuno

–          Prepare for the release of captive orangutan at the Care Centre

–          Build a release centre within Rawa Kuno

–          Establish feeding stations and support facilities for the ex-captive orangutan

–          Provide for local wardens and rangers to police the forest

We want to break the rescue, rehabilitation, release cycle.  Each individual in care also represents many more that have died during habitat clearing and they are more often than not, orphans.  Furthermore, when you break down the long term costs, captive care programs are very expensive and a donor’s funds could instead be better used to secure and protect forests and its biodiversity, employing the locals as rightful guardians of their forest, thus helping them and their families too.

Purchasing land like Rawa Kuno and protecting the orangutan will preserve these areas for our future generations of children and grand children.

So please help if you can, to care for an orphaned orangutan by donating to prevent the loss of its mother and habitat!
