Hockey is always ready to host any guest that drops by. Like any self-respecting Indonesian she will expect you to leave your shoes/boots/sandals at the door before entering her boudoir. There are no rules as such in Hockey’s home, but a positive attitude and calm approach are always welcome. She will roll over or prop herself up slightly to get a better view and to greet her visitors.

Today she is ready for a visit from her “stylist,” who will give her a nice makeover including brushing her hair to make it shiny and lustrous. Hockey enjoys feeling the stroke of the brush through her hair and on her skin as she blithely lays back. A bonus is that the brushing removes any stray bits of food that may have become stuck in her hair. Hockey continues to have a healthy appetite but is not the most delicate of diners.

Once that is finished comes a task of which Hockey isn’t much of a fan. Her nails need a trim, especially on her right hand where the nails can overgrow and dig into her palm. It can sometimes be a bit of a chore for all involved, but it is for her own good. Patience is a virtue with Hockey, and we have to remember not to take this for granted. Once this is over, Hockey lets her caregiver know there are no hard feelings as she tenderly squeezes her caregiver’s thigh with her left hand. After her makeover is done, there is plenty of time to relax.

Time passes by most peacefully with Hockey and her cosy nook can be likened to a Zen garden. Contemplation and meditation are easily accomplished with Hockey as she allows those who visit to bathe in peace and silence in her little oasis. You can allow your mind to wander along with hers. Time with Hockey is always well spent.

We marvel at how well Hockey is doing emotionally and psychologically despite her dire physical condition.
