Miki
$100.00 / year
Miki is a young infant orangutan with wide, enquiring eyes and a gentle soul. He is a little forest explorer who has already overcome so much at such a young age. He arrived at the OFI Care Centre in January 2025, after allegedly being found “wandering alone at a dock in Sebukat Village”, a highly unlikely story. At about eighteen months of age, Miki should have been clinging to his mother high and dry in the forest canopy. Instead, he had lost everything he knew in a sadly all too familiar story.
OFI was alerted to Miki’s situation through one of its fruit suppliers who heard about the baby
orangutan from a port worker. When the rescue team arrived, they found Miki being kept in the back of a truck – frightened, confused, and far too small to be on his own. His hair was matted and dirty, his tiny body scrawny. OFI veterinarian Dr Ketut collected him and transported him safely to the Care Centre. After the mandatory 30-day quarantine period, Miki was brought to the infant camp, Camp Danielle. Upon arrival Miki was clearly traumatised and only 2.8kgs in weight. With time, patience, and dedicated care, Miki was transformed. Over the past year he has more than doubled in size and is thriving, now healthy, strong, and full of curiosity. A little miracle child!
Miki’s surrogate mother is Ibu Eteng. Under her loving care he has begun to feel secure again. He is known among caregivers as gentle, sweet, and friendly as well as a little “manja”, the Indonesian word for “spoiled”. At this age, everything Miki does is adorable and his carers are deeply devoted to him.
