Jeffrey Junior … strong and sensitive.

It’s hard to believe Jeffrey Junior has been with us at OFI for as long as he has. The world is ever changing, and we must all change with it as Jeffrey is learning. Jeffrey recently gained a new roommate in the form of male orangutan, Somat. One of his former roommates Kuba is getting much bigger than Jeffrey so it was decided that it was best to do some reshuffling in sleeping arrangements. Thankfully, Jeffrey and Somat get along famously. There is no need to worry though as Jeffrey and Kuba are still as inseparable as ever when they are out in the playground and Learning Forest. Jeffrey proves more than a match for Kuba. He presents an impressive display of strength in the playground by grabbing the cross beams and shaking them. His caregivers don’t encourage this as we would like the playground to stay in one piece!

When not trying to rock the playground to the ground, Jeffrey busies himself with rattan balls filled with treats that are provided by the enrichment team. He holds a treat-filled rattan ball close to his face gazing intensely into it as if it’s a crystal ball. Then he proceeds to pull it apart. Once the contents are devoured, Jeffrey throws the ball on the discard pile and moves on. He is not one to dwell on anything. Jeffrey works his way around the playground and journeys ever deeper and higher into the forest. No tree is too tall for this little thrill seeker!  Up or down, Jeffrey is happy. The dizzying heights of the trees are just as fascinating as the muddy pools that form around the bases of the trees.

At the end of the day Jeffrey offers no complaints when it is time to wind down and return to his sleeping enclosure. After all, he has his new friend Somat and old friend Rimba Raya to keep him company. Both strong and sensitive, Jeffrey knows how to make the best of any situation.  An admirable example for us all.
