Miki is one of Camp Danielle’s most easy-going and affectionate young orangutans. Looking back to when he first arrived, it is hard to believe the transformation. Once one of the most distressed babies we have had, he has grown into a confident, happy youngster with a wonderfully calm nature. This is also a testament to our dedicated caregivers.

Miki has recently reached an exciting milestone, moving into a shared sleeping enclosure with his friend Onyx. He has settled in extremely well and enjoys spending his days enthusiastically exploring both the playground and the forest. If there’s a tree or branch that can be snapped, chances are Miki will find it. His boundless energy and curiosity often leave a trail of playful destruction in their wake.

Despite the occasional chaos, Miki has an incredibly gentle and affectionate side, especially with his surrogate mother, Ibu Enang. While he doesn’t always come running the moment he’s called, it’s usually because he’s completely absorbed in whatever adventure he’s embarked on. After all, Miki is far too busy embracing everything the forest has to offer. Whether he is swinging effortlessly through the branches, relaxing on the ground after an energetic climb, or happily dangling from the playground tyres, Miki throws himself wholeheartedly into play and exploration, making the most of every opportunity to learn and grow. Sometimes all that excitement catches up with him, and he will flop lazily onto the floor for a well-earned rest. It’s a hard life.

Miki is never happier than when surrounded by his enrichment items, like a child with his favourite toys. He has become quite the expert at puzzle feeders, while leafy parcels and coconuts provide hours of entertainment. Watching him carefully strip away the tough husk of a coconut using his powerful teeth is a wonderful reminder of the impressive strength, dexterity and problem-solving skills orangutans develop as they grow. His carers have also noticed him gathering leaves and small branches, encouraging signs that his nest-building skills are beginning to develop.

Miki’s eyes have the shine of an old soul that belies his playful nature. Miki grows ever more in size and self-assurance and is a firm favourite among both carers and visitors. His remarkable journey over the past six months shows just how resilient young orangutans can be when given the love, care and freedom they deserve.
