Holland has all the makings of a model orangutan… climbing, socialising and slowly gaining her independence. This perfect orangutan though is also one that can be prone to emotional outbursts, including jealousy!
Holland remains affectionate and some may say a little possessive (or maybe assertive) when it comes to her caregivers. Holland is an orangutan who knows what she wants and how to get it. She enjoys being the centre of her adoptive mother’s world and doesn’t react kindly to being slighted. Holland hugs close, encompassing her adoptive mother, Ibu Anteng, within her long orange arms. If other female assistants come close or attempt to engage with Ibu Anteng during Holland’s time with her, Holland doesn’t take too kindly to this. She huffs and puffs and bangs the ground with her hands. She does not believe in sharing. Only when she decides it is acceptable does she let others come near Ibu Anteng.
It is a different story when Holland is among her orangutan friends and peers, as she consistently shows off her generous spirit. When food such as mangoes are brought out to the playground in a big bowl, Holland takes only what she needs and ensures everyone else gets some too. Holland doesn’t spoil herself. Playing, climbing and interacting with her friends… that is what life is for and the playground’s climbing nets provide a perfect base for her.
She also has a new trick up her sleeve. When it is time for play to end, Holland will allow herself to be brought back to the sleeping enclosure. She will make it seem as though she is ready to go in, but at the last moment, she will swing out of her caregiver’s arms and duck back into the trees. She will only come down if a treat is on offer. She has her caregivers well trained.
The Bornean rainforest may be a big place, but it doesn’t seem too daunting for Holland as she continues to grow and explore.
