Crystal is flourishing at Camp Danielle and remains a gentle and much-loved young orangutan. She is released daily and currently shares her sleeping enclosure with her friend Vida. With her calm nature and playful spirit, Crystal exhibits a lovely balance of independence and affection. She seems to “love” everyone, human and orangutan, and they seem to love her back!
Crystal absolutely enjoys enrichment activities, especially parcels and hollow logs, all of which keep her busy and curious. She has a healthy appetite and we’ve yet to find a fruit she doesn’t like. During release, Crystal heads off on her own after first checking in with her friends and caregivers, showing her growing confidence and autonomy.
Known affectionately as the “water baby” of Camp Danielle, Crystal adores anything involving water. She loves splashing in rain puddles and pools around the playground, scooping water into her mouth and joyfully squirting it back out again. Bath time is another favourite, and she happily spends long periods enjoying a good “mandi” (Indonesian for bath) whenever she can. Alongside her water play, Crystal also enjoys playing with sticks and wood, climbing up and down trees, and travelling back and forth between the playground and nearby forest. When Crystal spends time climbing, she often settles into a single tree to play or rest for a while. While she will occasionally venture into the forest, she still prefers spending most of her time in trees around the playground where she feels most comfortable and secure.
Although Crystal sometimes displays ebullient behaviour when in her sleeping enclosure, such as throwing fruit, or trying to grab hair or the clothes of staff during cleaning time, she is generally very well-behaved when out in the forest or playground. She listens well to caregivers and is known for her gentle nature.
Crystal’s surrogate mother is Ibu Eteng, with whom she shares a strong bond. Under her care and the support of the Camp Danielle team, Crystal continues to grow in confidence while remaining the sweet, water-loving orangutan everyone adores. Thank you so much for sharing your love and concern for little Crystal as she grows. Your support has been vital and we, the people at OFI, are very grateful and appreciate your help very much.
