With heavy hearts, we must inform you that beloved Mabel has passed away.
As you know, Mabel came into OFI’s care emotionally and physically distressed, after being found at a palm oil plantation. We were inspired by her tenacity, but she still carried with her the effects of trauma and malnourishment from her life before being rescued, and she tragically died from fluid in her lungs. It was through your support that OFI could provide Mabel with her best chance at life and rehabilitation.
During her time at the OFI Care Centre, Mabel’s sweet demeanour and inquisitive nature were promising signs of progress. In forest school, she had begun to climb higher than she ever had before. She had developed a healthy curiosity in her natural environment, picking apart leaves and bark, and sampling different plants to see what she liked. When she wanted a break from play, she enjoyed coming over to sit quietly with her caregivers.
Mabel was a favourite of OFI staff, visitors and foster parents. She spent her last days surrounded by people who loved her. After being moved to the clinic for treatment, she was never without a caregiver from her own Pondok Dua, there to hold her hand and stroke her hair. Our caregivers and veterinarian staff worked around the clock to help her return to full health, but to no avail. Ibu Mena was especially devoted to her during this time, stroking her lovely red hair and sometimes singing her to sleep.
Mabel’s trusting and intimate nature with her caregivers will long serve as a reminder of hope between our species, as well as our responsibility to one another. We will remember her as she was in the days before her illness and passing, bright-eyed and confident, playing in the forest with her friends.
