Jeffrey Jr continues to grow in stature and ability. When you observe him high up a tree, he always looks like he is planning something. He strides imposingly along the tyre bridge linking the Camp Danielle playgrounds, with his head held high and his shoulders broad. He owns the space around him.
Jeffrey Jr’s friend group keeps expanding. He recently moved into a larger sleeping enclosure and gained a few new friends along the way. He is now sharing with Somat, Levy, Ucok, Rimba Raya and Adib. He has grown a lot over the last six months and is noticeably bigger when compared with his enclosure mates. He doesn’t throw his weight around, preferring to be a gentle giant. Jeffrey Jr happily plays by himself but doesn’t mind when his enclosure mates join him on his travels. He is patient with his fellow orangutans while he waits for his chance to pursue his own adventures. Jeffrey Jr has one focus – food! Even when he is high up in the trees if Jeffrey Jr spots some fallen fruit, he will rapidly scuttle down the trunk to collect it from the ground. He only approaches his caregivers if they are bringing fruit or enrichment.
Jeffrey Jr journeys back and forth between the playground and the forest journeying ever deeper into the forest each time. He will sometimes disappear into the bushes only to reappear again when he is spotted scaling the tops of the tall trees. At other times his caregivers at Camp Danielle will get a message from one of the nearby camps saying that Jeffrey Jr has made his way over to them. It sometimes feels like he has tried all the different fruits around Camp Danielle and wants to see what else there is in the great beyond!
Orangutans have demonstrated cognitive abilities such as causal and logical thinking when studies have been carried out on orangutan thought processes. Each orangutan is unique and different, but Jeffrey Jr seemingly displays an excellent memory, ingenuity and persistence. He is sure to make his foster parents beam with pride!
