Our wonderful Kobe continues to be a fascinating orangutan with a truly independent and wild spirit. Kobe’s distinctive face has always stood out, her complexion bringing out the shine in her eyes, but it’s not just her physical appearance that stands out. As an individual it is her unique characteristics and personality that make Kobe stand out from the group. We respect and try to nurture her wants and needs.

Kobe ventures far into the forest and always aims high with her climbing aspirations. Orangutans are semi-solitary, and right now Kobe is embracing the solitary part of her nature as she wanders off into the forest by herself. Whether it’s digging holes in the ground or shimmying up and down trees, there always seems to be a whirlwind of activity around wherever Kobe goes. She is now a seasoned veteran at digging for termite nests. She is also very skilled when it comes to making tree nests. She is a skilled engineer by anyone’s standards.

On the home front, Kobe enjoys her sleeping enclosure at Camp Cempedak (fun fact: cempedak is a tropical fruit similar to jackfruit) with Karti, Bimbing, and Judy, but Kobe very much prefers to be in the forest. However, there is one thing that will bring Kobe hurrying back from the forest. Enrichment treats from her caregivers. Caregivers bring a sack of goodies, and before we know it Kobe is the one within the sack! Like a child at Christmas, where the box is often more interesting than the gift inside, Kobe loves playing with the hessian enrichment bag. She is meticulous as well, turning the bag inside out to ensure she hasn’t missed any of the treats inside. Not one to be tied down, after playing with the bag and consuming the treats inside, Kobe barely pauses for a moment to breathe, constantly on the move, exploring her world.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – Kobe’s wild spirit and attitude will see her go far. We can’t wait to see her eventual return to the wild! Watch this space.
