The past months have been kind to Jeffrey Junior and he is developing at a fine pace. He has put on an encouraging amount of weight and maintained good health since his challenging arrival to the OFI Care Centre.

Orangutans in the wild have access to a wide variety of fruits, and at the Care Centre, Jeffrey Junior also has an abundance of choice, particularly since this is the fruiting season for cultivated fruits. Some of his favourites include mangoes, bananas, rambutans and citrus.

He is learning and thriving during forest school at Pondok Danielle, which is the Care Centre’s nursery. Jeffrey Junior is also starting to show some independence. He explores the forest in earnest going from one point of interest to the next, wherever it might be. Even while casually hanging from low branches, he continues to scan and contemplate his surroundings.

After playing explorer, Jeffrey Junior takes respite, lazily swinging on the playground ropes and basking in the heat of the day. Should any of his friends like Otan or Kuba come near, he will reach out to grab them for a playful tussle. After tiring himself out in the Learning Forest, Jeffrey Junior has no qualms about crawling into his caregiver’s arms and being carried back to his sleeping enclosure. His streak of independence subsides as he cries for milk in the evening. In order for OFI staff to tend more closely to his needs, he still sleeps in an indoor enclosure with the caregivers. Soon enough, Jeffrey Junior should be able to sleep through the night by himself.

After a traumatic start to his young life, the next months show great promise as Jeffrey Junior continues to grow in size and confidence!
