“Seize the Day” is most certainly Kobe’s motto. As soon as Kobe emerges from her sleeping enclosure, she immediately seizes anything within reach. It doesn’t matter what. It can be grass or mud, and she even tries her hand at art work by drawing lines in the sand. Kobe walks proudly by herself but she sticks relatively close to her caregiver, Ibu Leti. Kobe’s head snaps back and forth checking out the world around her. If Kobe discovers some fruit on a tree she will gleefully test it out. Her new favourite at the moment is guava which can be found in abundance on the way to the forest. As she gets to the forest, she wastes no time getting up to her usual tricks such as submerging herself in wet mud.

Kobe is now a master of the art of locating the darkest and most difficult patch of forest when you are trying to capture a photograph of her. Kobe doesn’t stop for a moment, as soon as she has started a “project” she has moved onto the next one. Before you know it, there is a rustle of leaves and an orangutan-shaped hole in the foliage where Kobe once was.

Kobe likes to explore far and wide. Later in the day you can be walking through the forest, heading to a “pondok” facility to hand out enrichment and find the long suffering Ibu Leti nearby calling Kobe’s name, trying to get her to come back from somewhere in the canopy. The concept of time has no meaning for Kobe. She takes as long as she pleases. Dusk can be setting in before Kobe finally decides she is ready to call it a day, much to the relief of her caregivers. Who knows, as you read this now Kobe is probably somewhere deep in the forest playing with her friend Howard, having a mud bath or leading her caregivers on a merry dance.

Kobe’s tenacity, spirit, and energy are infectious. We are excited to see what she has up her sleeve for us next.
