Kobe enjoys her time at Camp Danielle. Don’t worry you’ve read that right, for those eagle-eyed readers who have supported us for a while, you’ll know that Camp Danielle is the OFI infants camp, and Kobe is anything but small! Camp Cempedak, where Kobe resides, isn’t all that far from Camp Danielle, so it was almost inevitable Kobe would sniff it out at some point. For Kobe, the forest is always greener on the other side, and she always has to see it for herself. Kobe happily plays with the infant orangutans at Camp Danielle, who crowd around to see and check out this mysterious new friend when she appears as if from nowhere.
Kobe isn’t difficult to please, as long as you let her do what she wants. Caregivers pile fruit and enrichment by Kobe, metaphorically emptying the toybox out in front of her. Kobe engages briefly with these toys but normally prefers to seek out her own amusement. She prefers that we humans give her space, and we take our cues from her. During daily releases, Kobe idles her time away inspecting the leaves, leaning over them and biting them, or leaning from one tree over to another to see what is going on there. Her favourite activity while on release is to be up in the trees and that is what we like to see. Her mind is always racing and seeking new experiences. She looks down from the canopy at her caregivers, wide-eyed and innocent, questioning why they don’t see the wonder of the world as she does.
From our perspective Kobe is a model orangutan. She can make nests, find her own fruit in the forest (orangutans eat over 400 different food types, mostly fruit) and has no trouble pushing herself to the limit. She is an unstoppable force of nature and one we are very proud of. Thank you for your support and being part of Kobe’s journey. It makes all the difference.
